You’ve winterized your pool, you’ve winterized your yard, you’ve winterized your garden. What’s left to winterize? Don’t forget your exterior spigots and sprinkler systems!

Removing, draining, and properly storing your hoses and sprayers is an important start in winterizing your exterior water sources, but if the spigots and sprinklers are not prepared for the winter freeze and thaw, it could cause some serious damage and costly repairs.

When water freezes in pipes, it expands. This could cause cracking and leaking in the pipes or worse, the pipes could burst. To prevent this from happening, be sure to take the proper steps.

Turn off the water supply at the shut-off valve and drain any remaining water from the faucet and pipe. For sprinkler systems, be sure to open the drain valves and release water from the system. Consider wrapping any pipes with heat tape or foam if they have greater exposure to the elements. You may even consider installing an outdoor faucet protector.
