Imagine for a second, you’re inside binge watching Yellowstone and a torrential downpour strikes. You sit, silently watching in horror as water gushes down the window, thinking about how you should have cleaned that gutter out while it was 75 and sunny, praying that it will hold up for just a few more minutes until the storm passes.

It’s a chore we all dread, but it’s of utmost importance: gutter cleaning. While it is important to ensure that your gutters are clean and functioning throughout the entire year, it is always a good idea to do a thorough inspection and cleaning in the fall.

Clogs in gutters and downspouts are responsible for leaks, puddles, and water damage caused by overflowing water. As water pools and puddles around your house, it can creep into your home’s foundation, siding, walls, soffits, and fascia, causing serious and often costly damage. Additionally, water makes its way into basements and other interior areas, causing both water damage and mold growth, which can lead to serious health problems.

Aside from water damage, clogged gutters can also lead to damage to the gutter itself including cracks, leaks, and holes. These problems can be exacerbated when mice, bugs, and other pests find their way into the debris and begin building nests. Leave the problem until winter and the debris and water can freeze, adding extra weight and pulling the gutters away from your home.

Regular gutter cleaning is essential in ensuring the longevity of your gutters as well as improving the curb appeal of your home. Fall is an ideal time for this undesirable task as temperatures drop and leaves begin to fall. Removal of leaves before they become wet, soggy, and decomposed is ideal.
