As summer ends and the cool fall temperatures set in, we start to look ahead to those dreary winter months. Many people begin closing and winterizing pools and campers, but what about your gardens and landscaping? It may seem silly to “winterize” nature, but there are a number of benefits to preparing your beds and plants for the winter season ahead.

Removing dead plants, weeds, and fallen leaves can help trees, shrubs, flowers, and new plants grow in the spring season. Trimming trees near gutters and downspouts can keep debris in check and prevent clogging of gutters during heavy rain and snowfall. Getting rid of weak or diseased plant material also helps to reduce the spread of bacterial and fungal infections. While there are benefits to leaving some of this organic material intact over the winter season, such as providing overwintering habitat for insects and bees that are important to our ecosystems, it does pose the risk of providing habitat for less welcome pests such as spiders, roaches, and even mice.

Winterizing plants that are susceptible to harsh weather conditions or the weight of a large snowfall can help keep these plants strong and healthy for the spring season. Consider staking and wrapping plants to help maintain their integrity while also combating freezing temperatures.

And remember, fall isn’t all about removing, cleaning, and protecting. It’s also a fun time to plan your spring garden! Tulips and daffodils are popular bulbs that you can plant in the fall and be rewarded with beautiful spring flowers. For any foodies, don’t forget about planting your garlic bulbs for next year’s haul!

Winterizing your lawn and garden can be intimidating, but the effort is well worth the reward. A thorough fall clean up can give your plants a healthy start and help save you time and stress in the spring when you are ready to enjoy the sunshine!
