Fall is a great time to bundle up with hoodies and layered clothing to keep warm, but that’s not quite enough when the Erie winter settles in, dropping temperatures and buckets of snow. Now is the time to make sure you’re prepared for flipping the switch from A/C to HEAT!
Regularly servicing your furnace is a great way to maintain its efficiency during the cold season. Fall is an ideal time to have your unit inspected to ensure that, if there are any repairs or replacements needed, these can be done before it’s time to enlist the help of your furnace to warm your home. Did you know that with regular maintenance, you can increase the lifespan of your furnace by 30% or more? It may also be required to maintain any type of factory warranty, so be sure to read up on this whenever it’s time to install a new unit.
If neglected, a furnace can build up dirt which can have a number of side effects. A dirty unit may struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature and will cause the unit to work harder, leading to less efficiency and higher energy costs. Higher bills are unpleasant, but what about safety? A damaged or dirty furnace can lead to fires or carbon monoxide leaks, which is why we recommend testing and cleaning smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in addition to servicing your furnace.
Along with having your furnace serviced and inspected, you will want to replace your filter at least every fall. Furnace filters are responsible for trapping dust, pet dander, and fall allergens such as ragweed pollen. With fall being a time were people spend more time indoors, it is important to try to capture any of these irritants in the filter before circulating through your entire home.
Your furnace filter does more than just trapping contaminants—a new or clean filter can lead to higher efficiency of the unit. A clogged filter can cause the unit to work harder, which causes wear and tear on the motor, can cause overheating and fires, and can slow airflow. Clean filters mean better airflow, and better airflow means a healthier, longer-lasting HVAC system. Signs your filter may be nearing the end of its life include longer HVAC cycles, buildup of dirt or dust on the filter or in areas of the house, as well as a discolored filter.
Filters come in many different varieties, from fiberglass to polyester to HEPA filters. You’ll want to be sure you know the size filter your unit takes, as well as how often it is recommended to change the filter. Check the manual or packaging for your unit for this and other information.
